Baby Seth~ Red Dog Studio

November 30, 2009

What a great story Seth and his parents will have to tell in years to come!! You see, Seth is the first winner of our gallery wrap contest even though he never got a single vote on the blog. WHAT?? You say, how can this be? Well let me tell you how. Pam was the instigator of all of this.  You see, Pam’s daughter Megan is good friends with Seth’s mother Theresa. Pam and her family are regulars (and I love it when they come they are so much fun!! ) and Theresa has always love their photos but was not able to get any done.  So when Pam brought her daughter and granddaughter into the studio Theresa loved the images and had a newborn of her own.  When I announced Blog-a-Pallooza Pam formulated a plan and went into action with a vengeance. She managed to hustle everyone into commenting on the blog in record time. The really awesome thing about her plan was it wasn’t to win the gallery wrap for herself, it was to see if she could trade it in on baby sessions for Theresa because she wanted her to have great baby photos. It really touched me that she felt so strongly about Theresa and her family and my photography that she would make such an effort. Needless to say, I was thrilled to have little Seth, Theresa and Levi  at the Red Dog Studio for his first formal studio portraits. He was a champ and I’m looking forward to watching him grow!!

Some good advice for brides!!

November 30, 2009

So you’re getting married soon. My friend Joanna Banks-Morgan (who by the way is an awesome wedding videographer check out Diva Productions) wrote an article for Gulf Coast Brides on what brides should do for weddings to make their day go better. She called the top photographers in the area for advice and we gave it to her. Enjoy the article and remember this issue of Gulf Coast Magazine hits the stands soon!!! Look for it out there :)

It’s that time of year again!! Time to clean up the kids and drag them kicking and screaming out of the house for the annual Christmas card photo. My assistant Monika brought Alex and Hanna out  (note they were not kicking and screaming, they know it is pointless) to the Red Dog Studio to do their images. I was so excited to get to work with my new lights again. Oh I love the nice even softness!! Anyway, all three of them are very attractive people and they made some beautiful images!!! Enjoy!LJ0T8495LJ0T8556LJ0T8658 copyLJ0T8495 copy

Ashley and Justin make such a cute couple! Although rain was predicted all day for the wedding, the day was beautiful with a cobalt blue sky and beautiful fluffy clouds.  The wedding was at one of the most beautiful  churches in Fort Walton Beach and the reception was at Hurlburt Soundside. Monika and I had a great time sharing their special day with their friends and family!

Teaching

November 20, 2009

As most of you know, I also teach photography for the OLL at the University of West Florida. I have done this for many years and have had some outstanding students come though. But none like the ones this term! Wow, I had a class of excited overachievers!! They were awesome!

The basic fundamentals of the class are that you learn the principles of how to technically create a great image. The rule of thirds and others. My students turn in homework every week to be critiqued by the rest of the class. Our motto is “the only bad photograph is the one you didn’t bother to take.”  And then I turn the tides. ******Spoiler Alert if you are planning on taking the class you may want to stop reading now*** You see they learned baby steps and the technical reasons behind those steps and had to add everything together each week on their assignments. Lines+ thirds+ lighting…yadayadahyada and make one image. Then came the curveball. They had to do all of this very left brained things on an image that was taken from a very out of the box viewpoint.  Of course they excelled and created some great images. I was so proud of them!!

Our last class was at the Red Dog Studio. There was enough food to kill a horse and we had fun with a “Jason” Halloween decoration I had to stash in there before the tropical storm. The only person we were missing was one of the people who I think came the furthest with her art, Lydia. It’s such a joy to see the lightbulb come on and then the thirst for wanting to explore your own world more and more photographically. It just gives  me goosebumps!!!

The last assignment of class was a self-portrait. It did not have to be a whole body image, nobody else could take it and as a matter of fact it didn’t even have to physically be them. It could be a representation of themselves. Once again they rocked it out. They had two weeks to complete the image and I think I heard them worrying about the assignment for all of those days. And that was good. It meant that they knew what they wanted and how much more they could accomplish and how far they wanted to push themselves and they did it with style and class!!

Thanks guys for giving me so much fun and enthusiasm for the last few weeks!!! Keep up the great work and don’t ever look at this world in your old ways again :)

What happens when you get 500 photographers in one city at the same time? Madness!!! And if that city never sleeps and is full of great architecture and subjects? It is complete photo-insanity!! The fact I got to shoot with a super great photographer David Beckstead on my birthday was just a little extra lagnippe!! That’s NOLA speak for something a little extra. And that is the subject for another blog! So as we learned and grew we were able to take advantage of our great surroundings and make some fun images!! Enjoy :)

All Saints Day New Orleans

November 14, 2009

South Louisiana residents commemorate All Saints’ Day, November 1, by going at nightfall to newly cleaned and flower-decorated graveyards and placing lighted candles on the graves to honor the dead. This ritual still has great vitality in Lacombe, and it is practiced in several other Louisiana communities, though it is little known in other parts of the United States (where All Saints’ Day is nonetheless a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation and marked in other ways).

All Saints’ has long been an important day in New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana, brought from France as La Toussaint (a name for the day which is still used in French-speaking and French-influenced areas of the state). The above-ground cemeteries of the Crescent City, themselves such a distinctive feature of the urban landscape, were virtually mobbed on All Saints’ in the 19th century and earlier decades of the twentieth century. The wood engravings of the nineties and the photographs of the thirties show cemetery aisles packed with people, tombs festooned with flowers or beaded immortelles. It was a time for families to get together and for general socializing, a festive day for most. Vendors lined the streets selling tamales, popcorn and pralines, or perhaps la biere creole, a beer brewed out of pineapple pulp and fruit juice, according to Gumbo Ya-Ya.

The country around Lacombe, a town of 5,000 about a fifteen minute drive from the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, is woodsy with a mixture of fragrant, tall pines and moss-dripping oaks, and houses cozily ensconced under the trees. The land is different in Lafitte, south of New Orleans in the southern end of Jefferson Parish twenty minutes from the West Bank, more open, with houses and docks and moored commercial fishing vessels almost crowded along the banks of busy Bayou Barataria. The cemeteries here are small and mostly line the banks of the bayou too, several of them narrow wedges between water and road. Years ago the only access to them was by the water route or the narrow footpath that rims the bayou’s side. It is truly a spactacular sight to see and I do enjoy the quiet spirituality of the event each time I am able to be there to photograph.IMG_5293LJ0T5263

The oddly shaped crosses in the background denote those of Choctaw Indian descent.
Many graves are from the era when they would bring the bodies to the graveyards by boat on the bayous.

November 9, 2009

As most of you know, I still work as a freelancer for the AP in addition to being a full-time wedding and portrait photographer. I have photographed most major storms form Andrew to Katrina and all the smaller ones in between. So, today work began at O dark-thirty photographing what was Hurricane and now is Tropical Storm Ida. Here are a few images.Tropical Storm Ida

This is my favorite!! The old Abstentine House

LJ0T5124IMG_4794Dawnelle and Jesse compliment each other so well!! She is simply gorgeous and just as beautiful on the inside and he is ruggedly handsome and well….don’t get mad….beautiful on the inside as well. Since the couple lives just outside of NOLA and love the city we decided on their e-session location as the French Quarter. It was awesome!!!! The sky was cobalt blue and it wasn’t to hot or overly crowded as it can get sometimes. We enjoyed the beauty of Jackson Square with it’s wonderful view of St. Louis Cathedral and then hit some obscure areas for some colorful fun!!! It was a blast!

I love the doors and colors!
