I can’t believe that four years have gone by since Hurricane Katrina devastated much of South Louisiana and Mississippi. We knew it was going to be a bad storm, but the reality was much worse than predicted.

My call came late Friday night to go to Louisiana or Mississippi the next day, the storm was in the Gulf of Mexico and headed towards New Orleans as a category 5. Early Saturday morning I got up and drove the scenic route through Biloxi along the Gulf. Many folks had already headed out, some were boarding up to ride out the storm. There was an eerie feeling in the air.

The rest of the day I spend in Slidell, La photographing the preparations for the storm. I found a couple who lived in a fishing camp on Lake Pontchartrain. They were thinking of staying. Thankfully, they heeded my warning and left. A few days later I was where the camp once stood and there was nothing left. I spent that night at my father-in-law’s home not knowing that the sprawling five acre homestead would never look the same after that day.

As the weather rapidly I photographed some more preparations and then met my  friend and fellow photographer for the Baton Rouge Advocate Mark Saltz  at a fire station in Lacombe, La, five miles away from the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. We were lucky, the station had food and a generator. We were able to transmit images until the next morning when the storm made landfall. Then we knew the wrath of Katrina. As we were outside the station attempting to make images, we watched homes literally get blown away. At one point I heard what I thought was a fighter jet, realizing that it was a tornado we made cover. It struck two blocks away destroying everything in it’s path. The damage was mostly wind we thought, until the eye of the storm passed over us and the backside came. With it came the lake as well. People who had stayed in homes by bayous and the lake came swimming into the station. And the water continued to rise. There was no way out. Large trees blocked the road on one side and a bayou had overflown on the other. As some of the  firemen were discussing taking the ladder truck to the last remaining home in the area and putting everyone on the roof, others were at the new lakeshore trying to rescue victims swimming in from flooded homes. It was a hectic mess.

Just as suddenly as the lake had risen, it began to fall. It had gotten just a half block shy of the fire station. We made it to Baton Rouge that night to transmit images at around 11pm. No phone lines were up and we were unable to make contact with any loved ones. I had no idea how my father-in-law and husband had faired or even if they were uninjured. My brother who was working at the Cleveland Plain Dealer at the time stayed late at work hoping to see me transmit any images to know if I was okay. He said the first one came over at 1am. We finally got to leave Baton Rouge and head back to my in-laws home. We were unable to drive there, so we had to park the car and traverse through fallen lines, debris and trees the last mile with our computers and cameras in tow. Even in the darkness, it was immediately evident that one or more tornados had struck the home. My heart was in my throat as I knocked on a window hoping someone was there. My husband and his father were both there and fairly okay.

The next two weeks were a blur. People on houses, destruction for miles, water and thick mud and the smell of death. It is something that I will never forget. We worked hard and had to drive over an hour each night to transmit. Other journalists shared stories they had heard of both tragedy and triumph. It was a bonding of sorts, the need to reach out and tell the stories of the people who survived. We were documenting history. I think the Fix-a-Flat company had a bumper year due to the journalists in the storm. Every trip I made to Baton Rouge I had to pick up several cans to dole out to my fellow journalists in need.

In the meantime, my father-in-law suffered a hurricane induced heart attack. We lost him a little over a month later. He is now listed as one of the over 1,300 victims of Katrina.

On a bittersweet note, an image I created was part of the Pulitzer nominated package by the Associated Press and many of my images were on magazine covers and in books aboout the storm. It was an honor to be a part of the team, but I hope we never have another storm like that.

Here are a few of  my Katrina images.

Mike and Asha made such a cute couple. They had been dating for over 10 years and loved each other more and more every day!

When I photographed their wedding last winter, I knew their images told a great and fun story of love!  The groomsman jumping randomly in the wedding portrait didn’t hurt anything either!

This featured wedding is in Emerald Coast Brides magazine which is on the shelves of most major vendors right now! Grab a copy and check out this great couple!

Ashley and Chad 8.15.09

August 23, 2009

Ashley and Chad celebrated their nuptials at the First Baptist Church in downtown Fort Walton Beach. This church is amazing to for photographs. It has wonderful high ceilings and the light flows through it so wonderfully! And to make their wedding  even more intimate and special, Chad’s uncle performed the ceremony. It was a well done beautiful service.

With a wedding party about the size of a pro-football team in number, it offered the opportunity for some really fun zany images. Let’s just say we had a parade, jumped and even licked a foot. Okay, it wasn’t my idea to do that, but sometimes those groomsmen can be awfully impetus and unpredictable! But it was all fun!

After the wedding, the couple had their reception at the Ramada Empire Room on Okaloosa Island. A live band played the Blues Brothers, Elvis and other covers much to the joy of the audience and a photo booth complete with costumes was available to the guests. The topper on the reception was the Crimson Tide table, I’m sure Bear Bryant was looking over this with great approval. The groom’s cake was all roll tide and Ashley and Chad had even had M&M’s made with various sayings like UA, roll tide, 8.15.09 and a cute portrait of themselves.

Enjoy their images!LJ0T0608LJ0T0663 copyLJ0T1239details2

Kamryn and Kaleb

August 19, 2009

I have been photographing Kamryn….well, since she was a bump in her mother’s tummy. It has been fun watching her grow and turn into a beautiful young girl!

When Kim said they were expecting again, I hoped they would get their boy, and they did! Little (or in this case not so little) Kaleb came into this world this summer to give Ryan a chance to get away from all of the women in his house once in a while!

Kami and Kaleb came over to the Red Dog Studio to do his baby photos. Aren’t they cute kids!!

Enjoy :)

Dixi and Tracy Engagements

August 19, 2009

Dixi and Tracy just crack me up. They are the couple that just has fun and enjoys life.

They came out to a wonderful park in Panama City near the historic downtown area with their adorable boys in tow. We hit the park, the beach, the marina and even saw some crazy kind of renegade rock crab on land!

I found some really cool things to photograph in the area and we had a wonderful time on a Sunday morning.

Enjoy!LJ0T1969 copyIMG_4107LJ0T1778LJ0T1769LJ0T1984 copyLJ0T1942IMG_4056IMG_4017 copyIMG_3981Lomo (Medium Vignette)

Cal, Miriam and Parks

August 18, 2009

LI0Y5286 copyI had to stop and think how long I have known Cal. Man it has to be 10 years. He was a fresh-faced cub reporter fresh out of college working the high school sports beat like there was no tomorrow when I started working at the Northwest Florida Daily News. Since my shift was the evening shift we spent many days working the same stories watching the high school glory days of hundreds of athletes.

There was the crisp north county fall air during a Baker Football game, the excitement of a local team during state tournaments and many other fond memories.

As time passed, we both left the paper and went on to our “post-journalism” lives. Just before he left town he had me do some beach portraits of he and this beautiful young lady with sparkling blue eyes and wonderful curly blond hair. Cal’s eyes (you may stop reading now to save our friendship Cal) lit up when he looked in her direction. She was a true Georgia peach, educated, well mannered, a wonderful personality and beautiful!! When I took Cal aside and asked him if she could be “the one” for him, he did the typical manish method of beating around the bush. No politicial could have been more proud of his avoidance of a direct answer. I knew right then Miriam was going to be a part of his life forever!

Time passed and word came, Cal was engaged…to his sweet stunning Georgia girl. They were married in the summer and in due time decided that it was time to start their own little family.

Miriam gave birth to a son, Parks, a cute little man with the attitude of his father (I told you not to read this Cal) at times!! But a sweetheart with his mother’s eyes.

It was my pleasure to do their first professional “family” portrait at the Red Dog.

Ashley’s Bridals

August 17, 2009

_I0Y9020li0Y8083ashley

Ashley’s Pronovias dress fit her like a glove. She looked like a sophisticated exotic princess for her bridals and her wedding. I know Chad did love the dress, but that’s for another blog later this week ;)

Anyway, she came to the Red Dog Studio to have her bridals done as she didn’t want to dirty her dress or get to warm. In the end she was able to surprise  her mother with a storyboard of beautiful black and white bridals which was displayed at the wedding later that week.

Enjoy this beautiful bride :)

Tara and Chad make such a sweet couple. She’s business oriented but easy going and he’s a bit shy, but full of fun when he gets to know you. They came from Indiana to have their wedding celebration at Sandestin with their reception at the world famous Finz Restaurant.

With the wonderful Florida sunshine guiding their way, they said their vows in front of family and friends on the beach in a beautiful beach ceremony complete with sand ceremony.

The moonlit night was perfect for guests to party in the restaurant or enjoy the cool breeze on the deck as inside the dance floor was packed with people of all ages enjoying the music. Now, here is a slice of their day….enjoy!12345678910111214131516171819202122232425262729313233

The B. Girls

I love a good sunrise session! The Gulf is calm and the colors are awe striking! Anna and Sarah had on the prettiest sea foam green dresses that made the colors of nature just pop out at you! Their beach portrait session went great and they had plenty of time to play in the Gulf of Mexico by their South Walton condo the rest of the day!!_I0Y9234LJ0T1899
